What is the meaning of the song "Boulder to Birmingham"?

I find it incredibly touching and beautiful, but there's a lot of stuff which is completely unclear to me. OK, I see it's about leaving an unhappy love situation. But what does it have to do with wilderness, canyon being on fire, dust, trucks, and why would one want to pretend a highway is the ocean? Why would you need to wash yourself clean after a love affair? Is love dirty? And isn't it blasphemous mixing up romantic with religious feelings?
